The
word Navaratri means 'nine nights' in Sanskrit,
nava means nine and ratri means nights.
Navaratri festval
is the most celebrated Hindu festival devoted
to the Mother Goddess-Durga symbolizing purity
and power or 'shakti. During these nine nights
and ten days, nine forms of Devi are worshiped.
The tenth day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami
or "Dussehra" (Dasera). It combines
ritualistic pujas and fasting and is accompanied
by resplendent.
Though Navaratri
is celebrated five times a year viz. Vasanta Navaratri,
Ashadha Navaratri, the Sharad Navaratri, the Paush/Magha
Navaratri and the Magha Navaratri, the Sharad
Navaratri is the most important celebration and
it is also known as Maha Navaratri.
Navaratri festival
is celebrated all over India and Nepal.
