Kristen Otto won six gold
medals in the 1988 Olympic Games in swimming.
She is listed in the top five for the maximum
number of gold medals won by women in the Summer
Olympics.
She was born
in 1966 in East Germany, when the Berlin Wall
divided East Germany from West Germany.
After her Olympic
record, East and West Germany were united and
Otto, who was the member of the East German
team, joined the West German team to become
a part of the German National team.
Otto made her
record with the National team in the 1988 Olympics
at Seoul.
Otto was second
in the Top Athlete Poll of 1988, conducted by
the Soviet News Agency. Florence Griffith Joyner
was first and Steffi Graf was third in the poll.
Her six golds
were won in the 50-metre freestyle, the 100-metre
freestyle , the 100-metre backstroke, the 100-metre
butterfly, the 4x100-metre medlay relay.
